The US District Court for the District of Kansas, with less than three weeks before trial, granted summary judgment in favor of Honda finding that the In-Bed Trunk of the Honda Ridgeline does not infringe the asserted patent.

The plaintiff, using a commercial which featured the In-Bed Trunk of the Honda Ridgeline involving a group of campers pulling a fish out of the In-Bed trunk to appease a hungry bear who is about to eat them, alleged that the In-Bed Trunk was a major selling point for the Honda Ridgeline and was thus, he claimed, to be entitled to over $100 million in damages for patent infringement.

The Steptoe & Johnson team consisted of John Caracappa, Gretchen Miller, Charles Schill, Kathleen Long, Rachel Hofstatter, Adam Ellsworth, Houda Morad, Connie Shepherd and Monica Ameeti.
