Foreign Legal Consultant
Steptoe seeks a foreign lawyer of the highest caliber.  Candidates should demonstrate a high level of academic achievement both at home and in the United States.  It is not necessary for candidates to be admitted to the bar of their home countries, but such a qualification will be viewed favorably.  US bar membership is not required.  All foreign legal consultants must hold a law degree (typically an LL.M. or equivalent) from an US law school.  Grades achieved while studying for this degree will play a large role in the selection process.

Selection will be carried out on the basis of merit.  A preexisting business or personal relationship with Steptoe is not a prerequisite, although previous law firm experience is highly desired.  Some special consideration will be given to candidates with a Brazilian law degree and an interest, background or experience in tax and/or trade.  Spanish language skills desirable.   Successful candidate must have a US social security number when they begin work.  The firm is required to provide this number to the Internal Revenue Service for identification purposes when reporting an employee's income.  Foreign legal consultants frequently pay reduced federal income and state taxes.

To apply, send a full personal resume detailing academic and career achievements to legal_recruiting@steptoe.com, attention R. Thomas Rodriguez, Legal Recruiting Manager.  Include a transcript of grades received at a US law school (an unofficial copy is fine) and the names of two professors at that same school who will serve as references.  Submit a writing sample—in English— that demonstrates your legal analytical skills in the context of practical problems.  Law review articles or research papers produced over several weeks are helpful.  Class work and examination papers produced under tight deadlines are acceptable, but are less likely to show a candidate in the best light.  Principals Only.

Customs and Import Compliance Contract Attorney
Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, DC-based law firm, seeks a Customs and Import Compliance Contract Attorney for our International Trade practice.  Although not required, we prefer candidates with some prior work experience with US Customs and Border Protection and import/export compliance issues and procedures, such as work (1) with US Customs and Border Protection; (2) with a customs brokerage; (3) at a law firm with significant responsibility for import/export regulatory compliance issues; or (4) in an internal corporate import/export compliance office.  Candidates should have strong academic credentials, and excellent writing and analytical skills.  We offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits and a regular, stable schedule.  Principals only.

Candidates should have a minimum of three years of toxicology experience and an understanding of laws and regulations administered by the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency (especially EPA regulation of antimicrobials and other pesticides).  Knowledge and experience with either FDA or EPA regulation, combined with a demonstrated ability to apply toxicology to new regulatory areas, will be considered.  Experience with the design and interpretation of in vitro and in vivo toxicology studies and the conduct and application of structure/activity relationship analysis and computational toxicology are important factors.  Strong analytical and writing skills are a must.  Also required is the ability to analyze complex policy, technical and regulatory situations, to identify and understand implications of issues at an early stage and to communicate the information to the firm’s clients and to the broader industry.

A technical or scientific graduate degree in toxicology or a discipline related to toxicology is required.  A Ph.D. in toxicology or a related discipline is desirable.  Salary commensurate with scientific credentials and experience.  Principals Only.

Senior Pesticide Regulatory and Policy Analyst/Consultant (non-legal)
Steptoe seeks a Senior Pesticide Regulatory and Policy Analyst/Consultant.  This non-legal position in Steptoe’s robust pesticide regulatory and policy consulting practice involves working both independently and collaboratively with team members in Washington, DC, and others outside the US on issues related to US pesticides.  It provides a unique opportunity to interact on multiple levels with a wide range of clients and stakeholders, including individual registrants, industry task forces, industry trade groups and US/EPA/OP to provide strategic and detailed assessments of technical, regulatory and policy issues and to develop and implement resolutions.  Issues include those of broad applicability to the pesticide industry as well as those specific to individual clients and industry segments.  Resolution development requires a detailed understanding of issues, background, and implications, with opportunities to be part of cutting-edge solutions and novel approaches.

Candidates should have a minimum of eight years of high-level pesticide regulatory experience and an excellent understanding of federal regulatory and legislative processes; strong analytical and writing skills; including the ability to  analyze complex policy, technical and regulatory situations; the ability to identify and understand implications of issues at an early stage and to communicate the information to the firm’s clients and to the broader industry; the ability to provide detailed and documented support and analysis of issues and solutions; and the ability to explain complex issues and produce professional quality written analyses and comments.  A technical or scientific background in a discipline related to pesticides is helpful but not mandatory.  A M.A. and/or Ph.D in a scientific discipline will be viewed favorably.  Salary commensurate with experience.  Principals Only.
