Steptoe is a diverse institution, with more than 500 lawyers from around the world. Though our people come from varied backgrounds, we share a common firm culture that emphasizes the pursuit of excellence in the practice of law and preservation of a cooperative, supportive, and collegial atmosphere. We believe we have created a very special firm comprised of enthusiastic and effective people.
Steptoe is organized into five broad departments, each of which covers issues that regularly challenge international and domestic companies, regardless of size, industry type, or business strategy. These groups are:
- Business Solutions, which includes Corporate, Securities, Bankruptcy & Finance; Tax; and Property Groups
- Litigation, which includes Appellate; Commercial; ERISA, Labor & Employment; Government Contracts; Insurance; International Arbitration; Mass Toxic & Environmental Tort; Securities Litigation & Enforcement; and White-Collar Groups
- Regulatory & Industry Affairs, which includes Antitrust & Competition; Energy (which includes electric power and pipeline); Environment & Life Sciences; Government Affairs & Public Policy; Telecom, Internet & Media; and Transportation Groups
- International, which includes the International Regulation & Compliance and International Trade Groups
- Intellectual Property
While we are divided into these broad practice areas, our ethos and organizational structure fosters the development of critical industry and practice experience and supports a team approach to solving legal problems within and across all departments and offices, and our lawyers frequently divide their time among several of the five departments. This relatively loose structure encourages maximum flexibility for our lawyers.
Many new associates wish to gain exposure to a variety of legal experiences before beginning to focus on one, and we think it is important to accommodate that desire. We do not have a formal rotation program, and incoming associates are initially assigned to one of the five departments, based on their interests and the firm’s needs. There is an option to spend a portion of your time in a second department, and associates may periodically shift from one practice department to another.
The firm is always looking towards the future in our daily efforts to help our clients solve their legal issues. Steptoe lawyers are well-versed in the business and regulatory landcapes of their area of expertise, and work with practice-specific trial and appellate lawyers to develop the in-depth understanding of issues that is essential in developing the creative strategies and solutions critical to our clients’ current and future interests.
