Overview
Following the November 8 announcement of Gwendolyn Prothro Renigar's and Alfred Mamlet's election to Chair and Vice Chair of Steptoe's Executive Committee, legal industry media outlets were quick to share the news.
For The National Law Journal, West commented that "Our financial strength has never been greater—both the top line and the bottom line—and that’s a product of the recognition by our clients of the value we're providing." Renigar looks to maximize Steptoe's "…regulatory strength, government facing practices, strong investigations, and litigation," to "…address business problems or opportunities across practice areas." Diversity and inclusion will remain a priority, with West saying that "We must find talent everywhere we can. It defies logic to think all of your talent is going to come from one gender or racial, ethnic or sexual orientation group."
In Reuters, Renigar vowed to build on the firm's growing international presence, saying, "What we can do as a Washington-based firm with strength in the EU, the UK and Asia, is ideal in the world we live in right now." West anticipates continued success under Renigar, stating that "Strengthening our firm doesn't always come easy…One of Gwen's superpowers is she has the ability to do hard things and make them look easy."
In Law360 Pulse, Renigar praised West's leadership over the past eight years, stating that "I cannot overstate what a positive change agent Phil was for Steptoe…He grew our client base, our offices, and our profits, all while safeguarding the best of our culture and leading us with integrity and strength." She also touted that the firm has "…more than 100 years as a strong law firm, with some client relationships almost as long-standing as the firm…We also have the benefit of talent focused on emerging industries and practices who can help our clients move forward in a changing world."
In Bloomberg Law, Renigar says that "I may be the first woman chair, but I really follow multiple generations of women leaders at the firm. Steptoe had a women vice chair long before I was a lawyer and long before other firms had a critical mass of women partners."
