Overview
Politico Morning Money and The Hill quoted Micah Green in articles discussing Steven Mnuchin, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for Treasury secretary. In his first public comments as a cabinet pick, Mr. Mnuchin said that the Dodd-Frank law is “way too complicated” and that the new administration wants to “strip back parts... that prevent banks from lending.”
Mr. Green tells Politico Morning Money: “One shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that Dodd-Frank was a piece of legislation that left much to regulators to decide. In promulgating the rules of Dodd-Frank over the last six years, regulators in the current administration made many interpretations and judgments that resulted in thousands of pages of rules. These rules, under a Trump administration, will now be subject to both re-interpretation and even re-consideration. There are scores of issues that could be affected by these activities, without any legislation.”
On tax policy, Mr. Mnuchin stressed that tax reform will be a top priority for the news administration. Mr. Trump and Republican lawmakers have already said they want to make tax reform a major agenda item next year. Mr. Green tells The Hill that Mnuchin’s comments signal that “he’s with that program” as well.
