Overview
Steptoe partner Stewart Baker is featured in an Am Law Daily article titled “Steptoe Partner Makes Waves at SXSW Apple Debate.” The article, published March 16, discusses a heated discussion at the “Cryptowars 2.0: Silicon Valley v. Washington” panel at Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW) conference. Mr. Baker, a former National Security Agency general counsel, made headlines during the debate when he bashed Apple’s refusal to help federal investigators access an iPhone used by a shooter in last year’s San Bernardino terror attacks.
Mr. Baker, who has criticized Apple before over its encryption practices, described the company’s position as disingenuous. He claims that, in the past, Apple has bowed to similar intelligence requests from the government of China, a country that now comprises the company’s largest market.
