Overview
Steptoe partner Micah Green was quoted in an article in The Bond Buyer titled “When Congress Returns: So Much to Do, So Little Time.” The article, published August 26, discusses the busy schedule awaiting Congress when it returns from the August recess. If Congress does not pass appropriations bills or a continuing resolution to fund federal agencies and programs at current levels by September 30, there will be a federal government shutdown.
Mr. Green, who co-chairs Steptoe’s Government Affairs & Public Policy Group, says he does not think there will be a government shutdown but that Senate leaders will have to deal with the fact that senators who are running for president could use the debate over a continuing resolution and/or the debt limit to get more attention.
"Presidential politics has the potential to impact some of the bigger legislative issues in the fall. For example, debt ceiling and the potential for a government shutdown could become even more highly charged political issues if presidential candidates in the Senate get more involved in the debate."
