The Wall Street Journal quoted Stewart Baker in a November 24 article titled “GOP Rivals Split on How to Fight Terror.” The article discusses a divide in the Republican presidential field over the scope of American intelligence gathering to combat terrorism. According to the article, this debate has been brewing inside the GOP for years as several presidential candidates have tapped into conservatives’ mistrust of government following revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and others about the extent of American surveillance programs. But among many Republicans, those concerns have been overshadowed by security fears.
Mr. Baker, who worked on homeland-security issues in both Republican and Democratic administrations, says “What the presidential campaign has demonstrated to this point is that if you want to be the Republican nominee, you can’t have Edward Snowden as your running mate.”
