Bloomberg Businessweek Quotes Stewart Baker on Softbank-Sprint Deal

October 24, 2012

Bloomberg Businessweek quoted Steptoe partner Stewart Baker, a former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, in an October 19 article titled “Huawei May Surface in US Review of Softbank-Sprint Deal.”  The article discusses the potential deal between Softbank Corp. and Sprint Nextel Corp. that would be subject to a national security review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US.

Mr. Baker says that Softbank’s connections with Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp., China’s two largest makers of phone-network equipment, probably won’t kill its $20.1 billion offer for 70 percent of Sprint.

“The flap over Huawei and ZTE means that at a minimum, the extent to which equipment from Huawei and ZTE would be introduced into the US infrastructure will be an issue,” he says.  “This deal will probably end up getting approved but with a very detailed national security agreement.”
