Overview
Law360 has named Ruxandra Cana a Rising Star in the Environmental category. Ms. Cana, a partner in Steptoe's Brussels office, was selected for her successes in advising multinational companies and industry associations on European Union (EU) regulatory compliance and product defense.
In a profile published April 13, the editors write that Ms. Cana boasts “experience with matters from biocides to medical devices to nanotechnology.” In particular, they note that Ms. Cana acted as counsel in the first successful European Union chemicals legislation-related case to succeed before the EU General Court. The editors also note her win for the International Cadmium Association against the European Commission before the EU General Court, which was the first direct case related to EU chemicals legislation to succeed before the General Court.
“The reason we were successful, I think, is because we did not ask the court to judge on the merits of the science before them,” Ms. Cana tells Law360. “We did not tell the court we disagree with the science relied upon by the commission. But we proved to the court that the commission has absolutely no basis for the restriction.”
The list of Rising Stars recognizes lawyers under 40 whose legal accomplishments in their respective fields belie their age. A team of Law360 editors arrived at the list of Rising Stars after carefully reviewing a record 1,200 submissions.
In addition to her Rising Star accolade, Ms. Cana has been recognized by Chambers Europe, the Legal 500 EMEA, Who’s Who Legal, and Best Lawyers in Belgium. She has been named a “Life Sciences Star” by LMG Life Sciences, and received the “Clients’ Choice” award from the International Law Office.
