Overview
Stewart Baker is quoted throughout a Law360 article titled “Jeep, Tesla Hacks Spur Automakers To Confront Cybersecurity.” The article, published August 7, discusses federal cybersecurity standards for the automotive industry to combat the threat of hackers’ ability to remotely hijack cars.
In addition to cybersecurity measures focused on keeping hackers from tampering with a car's controls, Mr. Baker says that automakers should pay attention to developing mechanisms that in the event of a hack would give a driver the ability to regain control of a car without relying on its computer systems. In the event of an emergency, it should always be possible for a driver to at least steer to the side of the road and turn the car off. "I don't expect it to happen often, but it would be really genuinely terrifying if you could not do that," Mr. Baker says.
