Zengerle to Lead Expansion
Steptoe Steps Up Washington-Based Immigration PracticeDecember 29, 2003
Recognizing the added compliance burden of a constantly shifting federal immigration landscape, the international law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP recently moved to expand its business solutions and international trade and investment resources with the addition of Lynda Zengerle as a partner in its Washington office, effective immediately.
Ms. Zengerle is expanding the full-service practice group for Steptoe which will focus on all aspects of immigration law for businesses, non-profits and institutions of higher education, including compliance with the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001, the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and other legislation; assistance with I-9 audit activities, applications for various types of visas; and representation of individuals in all immigration matters before trial and appellate bodies.
"Immigration matters grow more complex and challenging by the day," said Ms. Zengerle. "The Homeland Security Act is just one of the major developments impacting both small and large businesses in all industry sectors, as well as colleges and universities. Organizations of all types must stay ahead of the immigration learning curve to avoid serious penalties. I intend to expand the practice group at Steptoe so we can help our clients navigate the maze of immigration laws and policies in this volatile environment to achieve their goals."
Ms. Zengerle brings a wealth of broad experience in immigration matters to Steptoe. For more than two decades she has represented corporations and individuals with complex immigration issues, advising international organizations and businesses on managing alien transfers into and out of the United States and on other immigration compliance issues. In addition, she advises corporations on deemed export issues.
"Lynda is exceptionally well-qualified to lead the expansion of this important practice," said Susan Esserman, Chair of the firm's International Department within which the Immigration Practice operates. "We know how important it is for our clients to have a single, comprehensive resource upon whom they can depend for all of their far-ranging immigration-related legal needs. Under Lynda's leadership, Steptoe will be even more capable of providing that representation and counsel."
Ms. Zengerle is no stranger to developing immigration practice groups. She previously started the immigration practice group at Arent Fox and later went to Baker & McKenzie to further develop its North American immigration practice.
Ms. Zengerle is a former chair of the Committee on Immigration of the American Bar Association’s Regulatory Practice Section, has twice served as a member of the ABA Coordinating Committee on Immigration and was an adjunct professor of immigration law at Georgetown University Law Center for three years. She often provides commentary on immigration matters in national broadcast and print media. Ms. Zengerle was the only private sector lawyer invited by the Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to participate in its December, 2003 in-house forum exploring visa policy issues.
A 1972 cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and a Smith College alumna, Ms. Zengerle is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.
