Overview
Bloomberg BNA’s Daily Report for Executives quoted Steptoe Chair Phil West in two articles regarding likely tax changes in the upcoming Trump administration.
In a January 13 article titled “IRS’s Top Attorney Deserves ‘Battle Citation,’ Wins Praise,” Mr. West discusses Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Chief Counsel William Wilkins, who will leave the agency on January 20, and the big role he played in getting the IRS through rough waters. “When you think of what the IRS has gone through during Bill's tenure, he should be considered for a battle citation. Bill has perhaps cut a lower profile than some of his predecessors, but that doesn't mean he wasn't active in his own way.”
Mr. West was also quoted in an article titled “Will Trump Keep Spotlight on Multinationals’ Tax Compliance?” The article, published January 13, discusses why the incoming Trump administration is likely to continue a crackdown on tax cheats in coming months, though the vigorous hunt for misbehavior by US multinationals could ease. Mr. West tells Bloomberg BNA that whether the IRS backs away from audits and enforcement depends to some extent on the agency's top attorney.
