Trial Lawyer Tery Gonsalves Joins Steptoe in Chicago
(May 17, 2017, Chicago) — Steptoe & Johnson LLP is pleased to announce the arrival of Tery Gonsalves as a partner in the Litigation Department. He will reside in the firm’s Chicago office, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017.
Mr. Gonsalves is a seasoned trial lawyer who has taken more than 20 jury trials to verdict. He represents clients in areas such as consumer protection, false and deceptive advertising, and claims under the False Claims Act and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. He also advises clients in connection with internal and regulatory investigations. Mr. Gonsalves’ experience as a police detective provides him with invaluable knowledge in internal investigations, internal audits, and other government matters.
Mr. Gonsalves has litigated cases in federal and state courts across the country, and represented clients before multiple regulatory agencies, including the Department of Justice, Department of Education, US Attorneys' offices, Federal Trade Commission, and state attorneys general. Along with his private practice experience, he worked in-house as deputy general counsel for litigation at Career Education Corporation, a provider of postsecondary education services.
“Tery is an entrepreneurial lawyer who has built a strong litigation and investigations practice,” said Steptoe Chair Phil West. “His substantial trial experience coupled with his diverse career will further strengthen our Litigation Department by providing additional depth for class action, consumer protection litigation, and government investigations.”
Jay Nuttall, managing partner of Steptoe’s Chicago office, added: “Tery’s arrival further expands our roster of commercial litigators in the Chicago office which was bolstered two years ago with the addition of an eight-partner team. It also comes on the heels of the arrival of patent litigator Kelly Eberspecher. As we celebrate our tenth anniversary in Chicago, we’re energized by the talent and experience these litigators have brought to our office.”
Mr. Gonsalves commented: “Steptoe has an excellent reputation as a litigation shop, as well as for handling government investigations and enforcement. I am really looking forward to joining the team and working with the deep bench of litigators not only in the Chicago office, but based in offices on both coasts.”
