Overview
(July 11, 2017, San Francisco) — Steptoe & Johnson LLP is pleased to announce the firm has relocated its Palo Alto office to San Francisco. The firm has been in Northern California since January 2014. The San Francisco office will be in the heart of downtown San Francisco at One Market Plaza in the Steuart Tower.
“We are very pleased with our progress in Northern California. By shifting our base of operations to San Francisco, we see greater opportunities to expand our intellectual property and commercial litigation practices and to add new practice areas,” said Steptoe Chair Phil West. “Our office in San Francisco will also enable us to expand our reach to additional clients that need our expertise in government regulatory and enforcement issues.”
The San Francisco office is led by partners Bill Abrams, Laurie Edelstein and Sanjeet Dutta, who represent a diverse group of clients – from entrepreneurs and start-ups to established companies – in a variety of matters relating to intellectual property and commercial litigation. Mr. Abrams, the managing partner of the San Francisco office, is a noted IP and technology litigator with significant first-chair trial and appellate experience in trade secrets, patents, trademark, copyright and unfair competition. He has been lead counsel in more than 85 cases since 2000, and has been named a Top IP Lawyer by the Daily Journal seven times in the last eight years.
Ms. Edelstein is a trial lawyer with 25 years of experience trying and resolving complex business disputes and white-collar matters. Since joining Steptoe two years ago, she has secured major victories for clients in California and across the country. Earlier this year, Ms. Edelstein defeated a temporary restraining order and obtained a motion to stay in a non-compete suit in San Francisco Superior Court. Last fall, she successfully represented a major department store in a series of expedited arbitrations arising out of a sale-leaseback transaction. In February 2016, Ms. Edelstein and her team secured a federal court jury trial win for Pacific Gas and Electric Company in a business interruption loss case in the Northern District of California. In January 2016, she obtained a significant victory in the California Court of Appeal on behalf of Southern California Edison Company in a putative class action.
Mr. Dutta focuses on IP litigation, patent prosecution and counseling. He has handled more than 30 intellectual property matters in state and federal courts and before the International Trade Commission. Mr. Dutta has a degree in electrical engineering and has represented companies in a wide-range of computer related technologies. The 2016 edition of Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine’s IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners stated of Mr. Dutta that he is a “‘practical lawyer who is really easy to work with.’ Commentators stress his post-grant nous, calling him ‘a real pro so far as PTAB trials are concerned.’”
Mr. Abrams commented: “Our Palo Alto office has established Steptoe’s presence in Silicon Valley and has been a great gateway for our work in Asia. Our new San Francisco office will expand our Northern California presence beyond Silicon Valley and provide more legal services to our clients. We will continue to serve our Silicon Valley clients from our new office, and enhance our ability to serve our clients in San Francisco.” Mr. Abrams, a long-time Giants season ticket holder, noted that the office is a quick walk to AT&T Park.
