Steptoe Litigation Team Quashes International Seizure Warrant

The multi-office litigation team of Frank Burke, Chuck Cole, Karl Tilleman, and Stacey Gottlieb has won a major victory for our client, a New York Stock Exchange-listed money transmitter firm. The team quashed an international seizure warrant secured by the Arizona Attorney General, which attempted to seize funds flowing from 28 states via money transfers to the Republic of Mexico. The court also enjoined the state from seeking similar seizure warrants in the future.

The case raised statutory and constitutional issues, including Fourth Amendment, Due Process, Interstate Commerce, and Foreign Commerce Clause issues. Lawful remittances from immigrants to relatives in Latin America now exceed $20 billion per year.
