(May 17, 2007, Phoenix, AZ)—The Phoenix office of the international law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP was honored as A&A Cottages’ Community Partner of the Year at A&A Cottages’ annual celebration luncheon on May 10.  Steptoe & Johnson received the first Community Partner Award, which recognizes a sponsor that made a difference in the lives of youth and the community.

A&A Cottages provides group homes for Arizona’s teen girls that have been removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect.  While living at A&A Cottages, the teen girls improve their educational competence and acquire independent living/life skills so that they have a better chance to live independently when they turn 18 years old.

Steptoe & Johnson is one of the main sponsors for A&A  Cottages.  For the third year, in 2006,  Steptoe hosted a holiday event for the girls where Steptoe’s staff and attorneys purchase gifts for the girls and hold a holiday party at the Steptoe office.  This May was the second annual "work day" at one of the foster houses where several members of the Steptoe firm volunteered to paint the residential houses.  For the last two years, Steptoe also has sponsored a miniature golf fundraiser for A&A Cottages, and Steptoe selected A&A Cottages as one of the recipients of a $5,000 grant as part of Steptoe’s 20-year anniversary celebration this year.

“It has been rewarding for Steptoe to be recognized in the pro bono community and to be involved in assisting A&A Cottages help these teens to become independent,” said Sandra K. Sanders, an attorney at Steptoe who has been involved with A&A Cottages for the past three years. “The winter party has always been a special event at Steptoe, and many of our colleagues take the time to volunteer and donate during the holiday season.”

“We’re so pleased to have Steptoe as a sponsor to assist us as we guide the girls through their personal journeys,” said Dorothy Corey, Executive Director of A&A Cottages.  “A&A Cottages was created to address the sadly increasing need for foster care group homes for teenagers, and we are grateful that Steptoe has given financial support and volunteered so that we may provide the caring homes for Arizona’s teens in foster care.”
