(October 21, 2007, Washington, D.C.) – Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a leading international law firm, today announced the addition of Larry Katzman as Deputy Public Service Counsel. Mr. Katzman will be a resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
"Larry will direct Steptoe's school partnership program, provide valuable supports to our pro bono programming and coordinate training activities," said James Rocap, Chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Public Service Committee. "He brings a significant depth and breadth of experience to these important responsibilities and will enhance our ability to comprehensively meet the needs of the community we support with our pro bono programs."
Mr. Katzman has a broad range of public service experience, most recently as an Associate Director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). Prior his service at AILA, he was Director of the Immigration Project at Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, where he recruited and supported attorneys in private law firms in pro bono cases, and gathered and analyzed federal immigration data for diverse audiences, including immigration professionals, the media, Congress, policy makers and the general public.
Mr. Katzman has held numerous positions of responsibility in community-based legal services organizations in the nation’s capital and in the Seattle area, including serving as a legal director and working with law firm pro bono and training attorneys at private law firms on pro bono matters. He has worked for United Nations High Commission for Refugees and was in private practice at a law firm in Seattle early in his career.
Mr. Katzman earned his J.D. at Emory University College of Law and his B.A. at Washington University. Proficient in Spanish, he speaks on a regular basis at local and national conferences, training programs and public events on issues related to political asylum.
