(January 9, 2008, Phoenix, AZ)— The Phoenix office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, an international law firm, today announced the recipients of its annual Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) prep-course sponsorship and admissions counseling. The program began in 2006 as one of several initiatives to increase diversity in the state’s legal profession. The applicants answered an essay question about how their entry into law school would enhance diversity in the profession.
Offered in partnership with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, the prep-course sponsorship gives the scholarship winners an LSAT preparation course valued at $1,249. The course consists of 14 classroom sessions led by an expert instructor; four full-length practice LSATs proctored under test-like conditions; and comprehensive materials including a copy of every available prep test. The admissions counseling package includes working with a Kaplan guidance professional creating and targeting the student’s law school lists; establishing law school applications strategies and constructing timely schedules for applications; and developing the student’s personal statement.
Tiffany Nelson won both a Kaplan admissions counseling package and LSAT Prep Course. Michael Cyll won a Kaplan admissions counseling package and Sylvester Richmond won a Kaplan LSAT Prep Course. These three recipients, along with the 2008 winners, will be honored at an April 2008 luncheon held at Steptoe’s downtown Phoenix office.
“Steptoe is proud to continue its LSAT prep-course sponsorship program to improve the representation of minorities in the practice of law,” said Fred Bellamy, who heads the Phoenix office diversity program. “Supporting the diversity efforts of the legal profession as a whole through programs like this for law school students is very important at Steptoe.”
“We’re pleased to continue the partnership with Steptoe to help students achieve their goals of attending law school,” said Steven Marietti, director of law programs at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions. “A student’s LSAT score is one of the most important factors in law school admissions, so preparation for the test becomes critical for students in the application process.”
Steptoe & Johnson also announced the 2008 competition for an LSAT prep course or a package of admission counseling sessions. The application process began on January 2 and continues through March 6, 2008. Applications are available via email from jlundberg@steptoe.com or by calling Steptoe’s Phoenix office at 602.257.7719. All applicants must complete an application and a 500-word essay about how they plan to enhance diversity as an attorney.
