(Phoenix, AZ) –Steptoe & Johnson LLP today announced the selection of Karl M. Tilleman as Managing Partner of the firm’s Phoenix office.

“I consider it an honor to lead my friends and colleagues in the Phoenix office,” said Mr. Tilleman.  “The firm enjoyed another very successful year in 2007, and I look forward to continuing to grow this office and to extend our local, national and international presence.”

A 1990 summa cum laude graduate of Brigham Young University’s J. Rueben Clark Law School, Mr. Tilleman will continue to practice as a partner in Steptoe’s Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith, and Commercial Litigation Groups, with a focus on litigating a broad range of insurance, antitrust, intellectual property, business torts, environmental, and other commercial disputes. His clients include leaders in the insurance, health care, money transfer, and entertainment industries.

“Karl brings a wealth of legal and management experience to the role of managing partner,” said Roger Warin, Steptoe Chairman.  “He has his finger on the pulse of the Arizona legal market and we are confident he will sustain the growth of this office and further enhance its reputation for providing consistently excellent legal services.”

The Phoenix office will continue to seek growth opportunities consistent with the firm’s overall strategic goals.  “We will build on our well-deserved reputation for providing the best possible legal representation to our clients in Arizona and nationally,” Mr. Tilleman said.  “The addition this year of Stephanie Quincy and her team to our Chambers-rated Labor and Employment practice is an example of our growth strategy in Phoenix.”

Mr. Tilleman points to many 2007 accomplishments by Steptoe’s Phoenix office – including a defense verdict for Allstate Insurance Company by Floyd Bienstock and his trial team in a Kentucky insurance bad faith trial, in which the plaintiff sought $1.425 billion in compensatory and punitive damages, and the closing of a $1.5 billion transaction involving the securitization of student loans for locally-based NextStudent Inc. led by Kevin Hunter – as examples of results he expects the Phoenix office to continue to achieve.

Mr. Tilleman earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary, Canada, in 1986, where he majored in psychology.  Mr. Tilleman was a judicial clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas and former Chief Justice Warren E. Burger of the United States Supreme Court from 1992-1993 and for the Honorable John T. Noonan, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1990-1991.
