Stewart Baker and J. Bennett Johnston Participate in Cyber ShockWave

February 18, 2010

Former Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security Stewart Baker and former US Senator J. Bennett Johnston joined former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, former Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte, former White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart, former Acting Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John McLaughlin, and other top level political figures in a cyber–attack simulation developed by the Bipartisan Policy Center on February 16.

The purpose of this exercise was to determine how the Cabinet and Presidential advisors would respond to a series of events that impact the nation’s cyber–security and critical infrastructure. Senator Johnston played the part of the Secretary of Energy in the scenario and Mr. Baker played the role of cyber coordinator. At the end of the exercise, the participants had an opportunity to step out of their roles to discuss the exercise with each other and with the observers. This post–scenario discussion focused on what actions could and should be taken to better prepare the nation to manage situations such as those presented in the simulation. The Cyber ShockWave was covered by CNN and will be aired the weekend of February 21.
