Teleconference: Competitive Patent Intelligence

(A Steptoe-Sponsored Event)
June 22, 2006

In partnership with IP Law and Business magazine, Steptoe & Johnson LLP sponsors a quarterly teleconference series highlighting important intellectual property issues that you and your company might face.

On June 22, 2006, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm EDT, Scott Doyle, a partner with Steptoe, will discuss when and why your company should perform Competitive Patent Intelligence (CPI) to navigate the briar patch of murky IP conditions many companies now face. A CPI conceptualizes the patent landscape by the following:

  • drawing upon an analogy to real estate,
  • identifying the valuable land and danger zones where third parties may have blocking patents,
  • determining unclaimed valuable land for patent mining,
  • suggesting barriers and design-arounds as protection strategies for mitigating threats, and
  • locating the public land of prior art.

Such an analysis is useful as an aid in patent licensing, due diligence for transactions, freedom to operate, patent litigation and patent procurement strategies.
