The GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) concept can be one of the most difficult regulatory concepts to understand and apply correctly. It is also one of the most useful and important regulatory concepts for both FDA and the industry to ensure that appropriate resources are applied to regulatory decisions. That regulatory efficiency was the intent of Congress some 57 years ago when the GRAS concept was applied to foods.
Participants will gain an understanding of the legal and other aspects of the GRAS concept and its application in the area of food ingredients, transient food contaminants, and components of food packaging. Specific examples will be discussed regarding the application of the GRAS concept to a variety of regulatory decisions.
Topics for discussion will include:
-
The legal and regulatory basis for the GRAS concept and FDA’s application of the concept
-
Examples of the application of the GRAS concept to regulatory decision making
-
Approaches to GRAS determinations and data/analysis requirements
CLE Credit is pending in AZ, CA, NY, and VA.
