Lucinda Low on DC Bar Program: Impact of the UN Convention Against Corruption on Anti-Corruption Law and Practice
October 23, 2006Lucinda Low is speaking at a program presented by the DC Bar's International Law Section / Public International and Criminal Law Committee and the International Dispute Resolution Committee.
The US Senate recently passed the resolution for advice and consent to ratification of the UN Convention Against Corruption. The First UN Conference of States Parties to the treaty, scheduled for December, is quickly approaching. The Convention marks a significant development because of its provisions calling for states to criminalize corruption offenses and cooperate in corruption investigations and asset recovery efforts around the world, and because it already has almost twice as many parties as any other anti-corruption treaty.
Meanwhile, a high level of law enforcement activity under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act continues. The time is ripe for global business, governments, civil society, and their counsel to assess the impact of the treaty on international anti-corruption laws and practice.
This panel discussion will present the insights of experienced practitioners on this topic and its implementation.
