Insurance Workshop

(A Steptoe-Sponsored Event)
July 5, 2007

Steptoe & Johnson LLP is holding a workshop at its Brussels office on "Modernising the regulation of European insurance ... are you prepared?"

This workshop - free of charge - will improve your understanding of the legal and regulatory challenges of :

  • Solvency II;
  • Cross-border retail insurance; and
  • Competition/antitrust in insurance.

Brussels partners Philip Woolfson and Guy Soussan will chair the workshop and contribute to the debate.

A full programme will follow shortly, but the following distinguished speakers and talks are already confirmed:

  • Solvency II: Karel Van Hulle, Head of the Insurance Unit at the European Commission and an architect of the  updated Solvency II rules, will participate in our discussion on the legal and regulatory implications. We shall also be joined by Peter Skinner, Member of the European Parliament, who - thanks to his experience with the Reinsurance Directive - will be the Parliament's rapporteur on the Solvency II Directive;
  • Cross-border retail insurance business: cross-border sales using the "single licence" and "passport" provisions of the Insurance Directives have had mixed success.  Together with Alan Beverly from the Commission's Insurance Unit, we shall be looking at what can be done to improve the legal and regulatory environment;
  • Competition/antitrust in insurance: Irmfried Schwimann, Head of Unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition, is leading the Commission's antitrust inquiry into business insurance. Our forum will update you on progress in the inquiry with input from Michaela Koller, Secretary General of the Committee of European Insurers. We shall also look at emerging issues in EC competition law affecting the insurance sector.

Lunch will be provided. The workshop will take place at our offices at Avenue Louise 240, B-1050 Brussels, end at 17.00 and be followed by a cocktail reception.

For further information, please call or e-mail Philip Woolfson on + 32 2 626 0519 or Guy Soussan on + 32 2 626 0535.
