Lucinda Low Speaks on Ethics, AML
July 21, 2005On Thursday, July 21, 2005, Lucinda Low will be speaking at the 51st Annual Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Institute in Portland, Oregon. Her topic, “Ethics, Extra-Territorial Corruption, and Money-Laundering Laws,” details the recent, significant expansion of regulatory activity directed at tracking the flow of funds for criminal and terrorist organizations. Much of this regulatory activity is directed at the gatekeepers—accountants, bankers, lawyers—who facilitate international transactions.
Ms. Low describes the vast expansion of legal requirements (both in the United States and abroad) imposed by legislation and treaties that govern companies, individuals, and their lawyers in international transactions. She considers the practical difficulties of determining all of the legal and ethical standards that may apply in an international transaction, and examines the ethical obligations of professionals and financiers associated with a transaction as gatekeepers to identify—and sometimes to report—potential criminal activity.
