Lorman Seminar: 8 Issues When Doing Business or Contracting With American Indian Tribes
September 12, 2008On Friday, September 12th, Shannen Coffin and Randy Evans participated in a national telephone seminar, sponsored by a commercial firm, addressing the opportunities and unique legal issues involved when doing business with Indian tribes and tribally-controlled enterprises. The seminar addressed the legal structures of Indian tribal governments and enterprises, contracting considerations, jurisdictional issues, taxation issues, and other subjects, with an emphasis on the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling in the Plains Commerce Bank case, which focused on the jurisdiction of an Indian tribal court to hear disputes involving fee land located on an Indian reservation.
