Peter S. Kozinets is of counsel in the Phoenix office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Intellectual Property group. 

Mr. Kozinets’ IP litigation practice involves trademark, copyright, patent, false advertising and trade secret claims.  He has represented clients in retail, news and media, high technology, aerospace and defense, communications, and food distribution, among other industries.  Drawing upon a diverse background in all phases of state and federal litigation, including pre-trial development and investigations, discovery (party, witness and expert depositions, written discovery and informal discovery), motion practice, trials and appeals, Mr. Kozinets has represented clients in courts, arbitrations and mediations throughout the country. 

Mr. Kozinets’ IP counseling involves advising clients on issues involving trademark and copyright protection, licensing and enforcement.  He frequently speaks on social media and Web 2.0 topics, and has advised clients on issues relating to user-generated content.  Mr. Kozinets also assists clients with safeguarding their intellectual property rights, brands and domain names on the Internet.

Illustratively, Mr. Kozinets has:

• Defended a major international retailer in federal trademark infringement litigation involving expedited preliminary injunction proceedings.
• Defended a high-technology government contractor in a False Claims Act lawsuit concerning the company’s patents, and prosecuted contract, trade secret and other counterclaims arising from a manager’s copying and removal of confidential data.
• Represented a large-circulation daily newspaper and its affiliated website in numerous trademark and domain name infringement matters.
• Defended an electronic components distributor in trademark and unfair competition litigation involving comparative Internet advertising. 
• Represented a national supermarket chain in trademark, counterfeiting and false advertising disputes.
• Represented an orthotic product manufacturer in patent and trademark litigation.
• Represented a nutritional supplement company in several trademark infringement disputes.
• Defended a publisher in successive copyright infringement actions.
• Defended a high-technology company against patent infringement claims involving software used in the printing industry.
• Advised a major international retailer on issues relating to privacy and data security.
