Thomas M. Contois is a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Litigation Department. His practice includes insurance coverage and bad-faith disputes, as well as other types of complex litigation.
Mr. Contois has represented insurance carriers in a variety of first-party property coverage cases, including environmental losses, business losses resulting from the events of September 11, financial losses suffered by secured creditors, losses from a dam breach, a substantial fire loss at a historical structure, and others. In addition to the coverage issues presented by such cases, Mr. Contois has also represented clients with respect to the bad-faith allegations that seem inevitably to accompany the coverage dispute.
Mr. Contois’ practice includes other complex civil litigation as well. He has represented clients in cases involving trademark infringement, tax matters, and employment discrimination. For six years prior to joining Steptoe, Mr. Contois was a trial attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice, where he handled a variety of matters arising under the Americans with Disabilities Act. He continues to counsel clients on compliance with the ADA.
