Brian M. Heberlig is a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Litigation Department. He is also part of the firm's White-Collar Criminal Defense and Securities Litigation practice groups.
White-Collar Criminal Defense
Mr. Heberlig is involved in all aspects of the firm's white-collar criminal defense practice. He defends clients in both state and federal courts in pre-trial, trial, sentencing, and appellate proceedings. Mr. Heberlig has represented corporate executives, public officials, and other individuals and entities in matters involving allegations of public corruption, securities and accounting fraud, campaign finance violations, antitrust conspiracies, tax evasion, obstruction of justice, environmental crimes, violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and export violations.
Mr. Heberlig has also conducted internal investigations on behalf of corporate clients to examine allegations of criminal conduct and handled parallel civil proceedings arising out of criminal investigations, including multi-district securities fraud litigation, Congressional investigations, and Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement proceedings.
Representative Matters
Mr. Heberlig's recent trial experience includes:
- co-lead counsel in the successful defense of DC Metropolitan Police Department homicide detective Erick Brown on obstruction of justice charges arising from a murder investigation;
- trial counsel in the successful defense of DC real estate developer Douglas Jemal on bribery and tax evasion charges;
- co-lead counsel in the successful defense of midshipman Lamar Owens, a former quarterback of the US Naval Academy football team, at a General Court Martial; and
- trial counsel in the defense of former Worldcom CEO Bernie Ebbers on securities fraud charges.
