Matthew J. Herrington is a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Litigation Department. Mr. Herrington's practice focuses primarily on white-collar defense, Congressional investigations, internal investigations, and complex civil litigation.
Mr. Herrington has more than 10 years of experience in white-collar defense and complex civil litigation. He has succeeded in a variety of individual and corporate representations in the areas of securities fraud, accounting fraud, environmental crime, FCPA, and international extradition defense. Mr. Herrington also has extensive experience managing and conducting civil litigation, including trial experience with a special emphasis on complex scientific and financial issues. He has represented both individuals and institutions in investigations and inquiries conducted by the US House of Representatives, the US Senate, and a variety of administrative and regulatory agencies.
Mr. Herrington represented Riggs Bank N.A. in connection with both Senate investigations and hearings as well as the Department of Justice’s investigation and prosecution of the Bank. Mr. Herrington counsels a wide variety of domestic and international institutions on BSA/AML and OFAC compliance and enforcement.
Prior to joining Steptoe, Mr. Herrington served as Counsel for the Presidential Campaign Finance Inquiry on behalf of the US Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, where he managed the investigation of campaign finance law compliance. In this position, Mr. Herrington gained substantive experience in campaign finance, tax, and immigration fraud.
