Daniel C. H. Mah is an associate in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Technology Department.
Mr. Mah’s practice focuses primarily on telecommunications and electronic commerce. He has worked on several major telecommunications mergers before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the US Department of Justice. He has also represented clients in a broad range of matters involving the Communications Act, satellite licensing and regulation, electronic surveillance and CALEA, the regulation of Voice over Internet Protocol, network neutrality, statutory copyright licenses, Internet gambling, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and data privacy.
In 2002, Mr. Mah completed a doctoral thesis at Stanford Law School, entitled “A Tale of Two Networks: Interconnection in Early Telephony and the Internet.” While his inquiry focused on network interconnection strategy and policy, his research spanned such related topics as telecommunications history, the privatization of the Internet, Internet peering agreements, and cable open access. In the summer of 2000, Mr. Mah worked at the FCC as an intern with Commissioner Susan Ness.
Mr. Mah began his career as an attorney in Australia. After graduating from Murdoch University, Mr. Mah clerked for Justice Robert French of the Federal Court of Australia. He subsequently entered private practice as a litigator with the law firm of Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Western Australia. He practiced in such diverse fields as native title, natural resources, and telecommunications law.
