John E. Nolan is a senior partner in Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Corporate, Securities and Finance practice group and heads the firm's dispute resolution practice.
Litigation
Mr. Nolan litigated environmental cases for some ten years, including representation of Alyeska in the Trans Alaska Pipeline case. During this period he tried cases involving automobile emissions and Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, federal subsidies for supertankers and the development of coal fields in the West. He has had extensive involvement in corporate and securities litigation.
Appellate Litigation
In the Supreme Court, Mr. Nolan has successfully argued cases involving the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) preemption and the availability of punitive damages under ERISA; earlier he argued leading cases defining the law of presidential immunity. He has argued a number of cases involving federal regulatory matters in various courts of appeals.
Dispute Resolution
In recent years, Mr. Nolan has served as an arbitrator or mediator in a variety of major cases. After appointment by courts in the District of Columbia and Maryland, he successfully mediated personal and corporate litigation involving the Haft family in 1994. He currently serves as a mediator for the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.
Miscellaneous
Mr. Nolan is a director of Iomega Corp. and was formerly a director of Prime Computer and Hooper Holmes, Inc. He is on the Executive Committee of the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under Law and is a former member of the Board of Visitors of Georgetown Law Center. He has been a Moderator at the Aspen Institute since 1980 and was a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, England, in 1987 and again in 1992. He served in the Attorney General's office in the Kennedy Administration and earlier as a law clerk to Justice Clark.
