Ray Werbicki is a partner in the London office of Steptoe & Johnson, where he is Head of the International Dispute Resolution group. His practice focuses on international arbitration, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Having conducted over 60 international and domestic arbitrations and related court applications, as a Solicitor Advocate (England and Wales) and Barrister and Solicitor (Ontario), Mr. Werbicki has extensive “heavyweight” commercial arbitration experience as lead counsel in an array of arbitral forums. He also has extensive, high-profile litigation and ADR experience, having represented clients in numerous major court actions, mediations, and expert determinations. Mr. Werbicki’s past experience covers a large range of industries and geographic areas, his having advised and represented UK and international companies, governments, and state agencies in a wide variety of corporate, commercial, energy, technology, engineering, commodities, and other disputes originating in numerous jurisdictions.
For several consecutive years Mr. Werbicki has been ranked by The Legal 500 as one of the UK's leading arbitration lawyers. Before joining Steptoe, Mr. Werbicki was Head of International Arbitration at Masons in London, where he had previously led the development of the firm’s Commercial Dispute Resolution and Commercial Litigation practices.
Mr. Werbicki is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London Court of International Arbitration, and International Bar Association.
Representative Matters
- Representing an Asian State and its national oil company in the defence of multi-party claims of $120m arising from sponsorship, construction, and operation of a 1300 MW power project. LCIA arbitration.
- Defending a UK-based commodities dealer and its Turkish subsidiary in a €30m action in the English High Court concerning facilities granted to processors of hazelnut products in Turkey.
- Acting on behalf of an EU State in the defence of ICSID arbitration claims arising from a State privatisation programme.
- Representing 3 leading global telecommunications providers in parallel LCIA arbitrations concerning rights to distribute technologically advanced telecommunications services in worldwide markets.
- Representing 3 international utilities in expert determinations and arbitrations concerning $multi-million adjustments to pricing formulae in long-term energy supply agreements.
