Michelle A. Cooke is a partner in Steptoe & Johnson LLP's Intellectual Property group. Ms. Cooke heads the firm's trademark transactional practice for the state of California. Immediately prior to joining Steptoe, she was head of the trademark group at another major Los Angeles firm.

Ms. Cooke specializes in counseling clients on all aspects of branding and trademarks from a business perspective. Her experience includes building brands and related equity and rights domestically and internationally, exploitation of trademarks and copyrights, trademark and copyright licensing, merchandising and distribution agreements, advising on marketing and advertising, enforcing intellectual property rights, and resolving disputes. In addition, she has in-depth experience in handling a wide-range of technology and internet related agreements and working with clients that provide online content and services. Examples of her work in these areas include preparing and negotiating software licenses, software and website maintenance and development agreements, application service provider agreements, click-thru agreements, bundling agreements, agreements and guidelines for the use and posting of user generated content, counseling on copyright and trademark issues unique to the internet, domain name disputes, terms of use and privacy policies. In early 2008, Ms. Cooke was recognized as one of the top ten trademark attorneys in the state of California (Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journals, April 2008).

Ms. Cooke has presented seminars on intellectual property in the apparel industry and online attorney advertising; she has also written on the international protection of personal data.
