Katherine C. Helzer is an associate in the Chicago office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where she is a member of the Litigation Department.

Ms. Helzer has represented clients in disputes involving allegations of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, tortious interference, unfair competition, misappropriation of trade secrets, and securities fraud. Her experience also includes litigation involving the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act and enforcement of judgments in jurisdictions outside the United States.

Prior to moving to Chicago, Ms. Helzer practiced law in Los Angeles.

Representative Matters

  • Advised consulting firm in litigation related to turnaround management projects for organizations in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings;
  • Represented consulting firm in federal lawsuit seeking damages from former employees for violating non-compete/non-solicit agreements and unfair competitions;
  • Represented witness during deposition by NYSE Division of Enforcement;
  • Defended pharmaceutical company in class actions alleging securities law violations;
  • Resisted antitrust challenges to Master Settlement Agreement between tobacco producers and 46 US states, and helped prepare the brief that resulted in the grant of defendants’ motion to dismiss with prejudice in Sanders v. Lockyer, 365 F.Supp.2d 1093 (N.D.Cal. 2005); and
  • Defended studio and television subsidiary against suit to enjoin theatrical release.

Noteworthy

  • Clerk to the Supreme Court of the Navajo Nation in Spring 2000, where she researched and drafted opinions to assist highest Navajo court to resolve appeals of lower tribal court decisions.
