Yves Botteman is a partner in the Brussels office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP. He focuses his practice on competition law.

Mr. Botteman represents global and European businesses before the European Commission and national competition authorities in relation to antitrust violations (including cartels and abuses of monopoly position) and merger control.

He also advises clients on competition issues arising from IP settlement agreements, patent and know-how licensing, distribution, R&D and other specialization agreements between undertakings. Mr. Botteman assists clients in implementing antitrust compliance programs. 

With more than 10 years of experience in Brussels and Washington, Mr. Botteman has gained substantial exposure to industries as diverse as construction materials, chemicals, automotive, industrial gases, medical devices and hygiene products, carton packaging, and enterprise software.

Mr. Botteman is a regular speaker on the competition law aspects of IP licensing.

Prior to joining Steptoe, he was a senior associate at a leading global law firm in Brussels.

  • Advising Japan Airlines in relation to the creation of a joint venture with BA on Europe/Japan destinations.
  • Representing Japan Airlines in the EC probe into international passenger services between Europe and Japan.
  • Representing a French-based engineering group as complainant in the EC abuse of dominant position investigation against a global mining conglomerate.
  • Acting for an Asian airline in the Commission’s investigation into price-fixing in the air cargo sector.
  • Representing a leading global energy services supplier in securing merger control clearances in relation to the sale of minority shareholdings in Poland and the Czech Republic.
  • Securing Phase I clearance, with remedies, in relation to the combination of two leading premix mortar suppliers in Europe.
  • Acting on behalf of a European glass maker in the Commission’s cartel investigation in the flat glass and carglass industries.
  • Acting on behalf of a private equity fund in relation to the EC merger control aspects of its proposed acquisition and combination of two carton packaging manufacturers.
  • Representing a European-based chemical company in the Commission’s cartel investigation on the European hydrogen peroxide market.
  • Acting on behalf of a construction materials conglomerate on the EC merger control aspects of its acquisition of a major European plasterboard supplier.
  • Advising a US-based enterprise software developer in its antitrust defense against a public take-over bid launched by its closest US rival.
  • Representing clients in relation to national and multi-jurisdictional merger filings.
