Eric Tober is a senior government affairs advisor in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Government Affairs and Public Policy practice. His practice focuses on issues involving infrastructure development and financing, R&D funding, natural resources, and energy production and delivery. Having served on Capitol Hill in both the House and the Senate, Mr. Tober provides both breadth and depth to the clients he serves.
Mr. Tober began his work on Capitol Hill as an aide to Congressman Terry Bruce from Illinois. Following Congressman Bruce’s retirement from the House of Representatives, Mr. Tober served as Projects Director and Legislative Aide to United States Senator J. Bennett Johnston of Louisiana, working with the Senate Budget Committee, the Senate Appropriations Committee the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee and numerous federal and state regulatory agencies until the Senator’s retirement in 1997. He aided Senator Johnston with great success on numerous major infrastructure and economic development projects in Louisiana and across the nation. These projects included: transportation infrastructure development for ports, airports, highways and railroads; defense and university research projects; flood control and hurricane protection projects; natural resources research and protection; and major procurements for several federal agencies.
Beginning with his work in the US Senate, Mr. Tober developed extensive relationships with the nation’s tribal leaders and a keen understanding of issues that impact this nation’s Native American tribes and Indian communities. He has represented and provided consulting services to a number of tribal governments and Native American organizations on issues including appropriations, infrastructure and economic development, education, sacred sites and cultural issues protection, taxation, gaming, and land reacquisition. Mr. Tober has assisted tribes in their efforts to develop and exercise greater long-term political influence through the refinement of issues and external messages and the use of public affairs campaigns.
