Alexander J. Urbelis is an associate in the New York office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Litigation Department. His litigation and arbitration experience involves representing major insurers in complex coverage disputes as well as one of the world’s largest reinsurers in a matter concerning the duty of utmost good faith.
Prior to joining Steptoe, Mr. Urbelis served as a Graduate Fellow in the Office of General Counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency where he provided counsel on legal issues ranging from intelligence support to litigation to administrative law. In this capacity, Mr. Urbelis also provided legal services to the Terrorist Threat Integration Center (now known as the National Counterterrorism Center).
Mr. Urbelis worked as a Research Associate in the Technical Analysis Group of Dartmouth College’s Institute for Security Technology Studies, a national center for cyber security and counterterrorism research and analysis. He also served as a judicial extern to the Hon. Denise Johnson of the Vermont Supreme Court as well as a summer intern in the US Army JAG Corps’ Labor and Employment Law Division in Washington, DC.
Mr. Urbelis has appeared on television and radio programs discussing computer security issues, including most recently CNN’s Business Unusual, and he is a frequent contributor to Off the Hook, a radio program dedicated to the discussion of technology that airs weekly on WBAI in New York City. While at Oxford, Mr. Urbelis’ dissertation, which received a distinction from the Law Faculty, focused on communication carriers’ compliance and privacy issues arising from the European Union’s new data retention directive.
