Jose Burmeister is a foreign law consultant in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the International Department. Mr. Burmeister’s practice focuses on international trade and foreign direct investment.
Mr. Burmeister advises sovereign and non-sovereign clients on matters arising under the agreements of the World Trade Organization; he also provides legal and strategic advice on expanding access to foreign markets.
Mr. Burmeister brings significant trade policy experience to Steptoe. Prior to pursuing his LLM, he worked as a legal advisor at the General Directorate for International Economic Affairs” (DIRECON), the international economic arm of the Chilean government, in Santiago. He represented the Chilean government in negotiating bilateral investment treaties and trade agreements with other countries. He also advised the Government of Chile on World Trade Organization related issues.
Mr. Burmeister was also a founder of the Chinese Legal Studies Center in Santiago, Chile.
