Larry Janssen is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP. He is a trial lawyer who has taken over 200 cases to verdict. His practice is nationwide and focuses on the organization, management and trial before juries of litigation considered significant by the client because of size, complexity or the issues involved. He has lectured extensively on trial practice, particularly in the area of toxic torts.
Most of Mr. Janssen's practice involves jury trials. Because Steptoe & Johnson LLP has a large number of talented lawyers working with him, he is able to concentrate on the development of strategy, key testimony and trial issues.
Mr. Janssen and his practice group represent a large number of major petroleum, chemical and other diverse companies in cases involving claims of injury, death and property damage resulting from exposure to toxic materials. He is national counsel for a number of these companies with regard to specific products or types of claims.
He has represented clients in cases arising from explosions, ship groundings, petroleum pipeline breaks, air borne industrial site emissions, underground water contamination, superfund sites and employee work exposures.
He is consistently engaged in the organization, management and trial of mass tort litigation, where the number of plaintiffs range from several hundred thousand to a few hundred. Very often, Mr. Janssen represents all or a substantial number of all defendants sued. Frequently, he is retained shortly before trial to be trial counsel in litigation prepared by other law firms.
Mr. Janssen's experience includes trials involving issues of antitrust, securities violation, ERISA, property tax valuation, breach of contract, tortious interference with contract, fraud and punitive damages. Most recently, he has represented the market leader in agricultural biotechnology in major litigation involving a claim of violation of a technology licensing agreement.
