Apparel Industry Alert - Vietnamese Apparel Imports

May 6, 2008

Today, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) announced the results of its second six (6) month review of Vietnamese apparel imports, and again concluded that there was "insufficient evidence to warrant the self-initiation of an antidumping duty investigation." The DOC's press release is here

In this review, the DOC analyzed import data for the period August 2007 through January 2008 from five broad apparel categories covering approximately 500 ten-digit tariff lines. The DOC found that there were no imports in approximately 200 of these tariff lines, and further concluded that for a large percentage of the remaining lines, per unit values were increasing. The DOC also concluded that unit prices and import volumes of Vietnamese apparel were in line with, or exceeded, those from other apparel exporting countries.

The DOC's next -- and final -- notice is scheduled for release in October 2008, shortly before the US elections.
