On May 24, Doron Ezickson from the Anti-Defamation League spoke on “The State of Hate in America and Strategies for Moving Forward” at the Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s Lunch & Learn Series. Mr. Ezickson shared some startling statistics about young people’s understanding of tolerance and hate speech, described the decline of tolerance in today’s society here and abroad, and detailed how the ability to disseminate information over internet platforms has increased expressions of hate across American society.
On May 17, Rachel Tiven, CEO of Lambda Legal, spoke to a group of lawyers and staff about the history of legal discrimination, legal developments impacting the LGBTQ+ community, and opportunities for civic engagement. Ms. Tiven discussed Lambda’s current litigation strategies and how the organization’s focus has pivoted in the Trump Administration. Lambda Legal was founded in 1973 to protect and promote equality and to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression or HIV status through impact litigation, education and policy work.
On May 17, the Asian Lawyers Affinity Group hosted a formal tea ceremony demonstration and provided sample tea and traditional Asian snacks, known as wagashi, to a group of lawyers and staff in our DC office. The ceremony was led by Bo Yue, with instruction from the volunteer-based Chado Urasenke Tankokai Washington, DC Association. The association is a nonprofit organization focused on the Japanese Way of Tea.
