A Culture. A Commitment. A Way of Life.
Steptoe is committed to fostering a firm culture that is welcoming and supportive to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride, Steptoe’s affinity group for LGBTQ+ members and allies, meets regularly to ensure that we meet our goals of inclusion within the firm and support both equality and inclusion in the communities where we live and work. The Pride group brings speakers to the firm to address issues important to the LGBTQ+ community, hosts Pride monthly events, and offers a supportive space for dialogue concerning important LGBTQ+ issues. Steptoe also demonstrates its support for inclusion and equality by dedicating substantial time and resources to pro bono work, including partnering with the Human Rights Campaign and Lambda Legal. The Human Rights Campaign recognized Steptoe’s commitment to equality with a perfect score on the 2017 Corporate Equality Index.
Self-expression and self-identification are part of Steptoe’s professional values, and support of the LGBTQ+ community. One way we’re practicing these values is sharing our preferred gender pronouns within our email signatures.
Steptoe continued its support of our LGBTQ+ community during Pride Season 2018. In mid-May, members of our Pride group in our Washington office hosted an intimate breakfast with Rachel Tiven, CEO of Lambda Legal. In early June, our Washington office also held a Pride kick-off lunch for the firm where we invited the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to update our lawyers and staff about the state of play of LGBTQ rights in the United States. We also announced the changing of the Steptoe logo to rainbow colors for the month, and the addition of one’s pronouns in our email signature blocks. Firm leadership continued to wear their Steptoe Pride pins every day, signage celebrating Pride month adorned many of our lobbies, and many offices hosted a weekly Casual for a Cause for local LGBTQ charities. Our Phoenix office hosted its second annual Pride Happy Hour, and our London office held a Pride lunch. Our New York office also displayed a Pride flag and culminated the month with a rainbow cake. Our San Francisco office took a tour of the city highlighting local LGBTQ+ history. Our Washington office also hosted a Nationals Night OUT, surprised everyone with Steptoe Pride rainbow cookies, sponsored a post-softball happy hour at an established gay restaurant in Dupont Circle, and hosted An Evening OUT networking event attended by over 120 lawyers and staff from peer firms, industry, and academia. Diana Flynn, Litigation Director at Lambda Legal, provided keynote remarks.
