An experienced first-chair trial lawyer, Ashwin J. Ram represents individuals and companies in high-profile government investigations and prosecutions and complex civil litigation and regulatory matters. Prior to joining Steptoe, Ashwin spent more than seven years as a federal prosecutor, most recently as an assistant US attorney in the Major Frauds Section of the US Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.
Clients benefit from his extensive experience in all aspects of federal criminal practice, from the investigatory stage through trial, sentencing and appeal. As a federal prosecutor, Ashwin handled more than a dozen trials and charged, negotiated, and resolved more than 100 criminal matters involving cumulative losses in excess of $1.5 billion. He was one of the lead prosecutors in the investigation and prosecution of "Operation Spinal Cap," one of the largest health care fraud prosecutions in California history. He also led a series of prosecutions into compounding pharmacies, in which he investigated pharmacies, executives, physicians, sales representatives, and related entities collectively responsible for dispensing over $250 million of allegedly unnecessary and exorbitantly priced compounded drugs. Along with health care fraud and federal Anti-Kickback Statute violations, Ashwin has investigated and prosecuted a variety of other matters relevant to potential corporate and individual clients, including insider trading, bribery, False Claims Act violations, money laundering, and investment fraud, as well as violations of the mail, wire, bank, securities, and tax fraud statutes.
In addition to his criminal litigation experience, Ashwin has litigated civil cases in both federal and state courts, as well as before arbitration panels. His litigation experience includes a broad range of consumer class actions, reinsurance disputes, and general commercial matters.
Prior to joining the US Attorney's Office, Ashwin served as general counsel for a technology startup company. As the company's primary legal counsel he provided legal and strategic business advice and support across a spectrum of internal functions and legal issues. As a result of his in-house experience, Ashwin has a deeper understanding of the structure, operations, and needs of corporate clients, and an appreciation of the role and challenges faced by in-house counsel. Before going in-house, Ashwin worked at an AmLaw 100 firm, where he managed litigation in federal and state courts, as well as arbitrations.
