(April 18, 2018, Phoenix, AZ) — Steptoe partner Karl Tilleman is featured on the cover of the 2018 edition of Southwest Super Lawyers. In a profile titled “King of the Long Shot: Karl Tilleman is as a sure a shot in court as he was on the court,” the editors showcase the many highlights of Tilleman’s career stretching from his early days as a record-breaking Canadian basketball star to his clerkships at the US Supreme Court to his Mormon missionary work and to his courtroom success as a seasoned trial lawyer and class action litigator.
In highlighting his basketball career, the editors reminisce about the 1984 Olympics, where Tilleman, as a member of the Canadian National Basketball team, faced off against Michael Jordan. At the following games in 1988, Tilleman set an Olympic record for the most three-point baskets in a single game, a record that has never been topped.
After serving as a law clerk to both Chief Justice Warren Burger and Justice Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court, Tilleman joined Steptoe, where he has served as a managing partner of the Phoenix office and as head of the firm’s 120-lawyer commercial litigation group.
Tilleman, who has been recognized in Southwest Super Lawyers every year since 2009, tells the editors that he loves litigation and can draw comparisons to athletics: “There’s a little bit of a chase; there’s the competition part in taking an adversarial position. I enjoy the personal relations, particularly in jury trials; working with people. Plus, it’s not hard emotionally on me, because I feel—no matter the outcome—that’s the way life works out.”
At Steptoe, Tilleman focuses on complex contracts, insurance bad faith and punitive damages, healthcare, antitrust, intellectual property, and class action disputes. He has represented clients like AIG, Western Union and the Harlem Globetrotters. Tilleman was recently retained by Lynn Tilton and Patriarch Partners to represent them in an ownership dispute involving MD Helicopters of Mesa. MD Helicopters also recently retained Tilleman to represent the company in a contract dispute with Boeing.
Paul Charlton, who co-leads the representation and serves as managing partner of Steptoe’s Phoenix office, tells Super Lawyers that what makes Karl a great lawyer is his Olympic drive to win. “More than that, the thing that governs that drive is a moral and ethical compass—and his is second to none. I don’t know of any other lawyer in this state that has all of those outstanding qualities.”
