Overview
Law360 quoted Dane Jaques in a December 14 article titled “Expanded Drone Registry To Spark More Enforcement Action.” The article discusses a provision of the National Defense Authorization Act, signed by President Trump, that reinstates a registration requirement for recreational drone users. Experts believe that this paves the way for more enforcement actions related to privacy, safety and national security.
Mr. Jaques explains that virtually all of the reported drone incidents involve hobbyists, not commercial drone operators, and these collisions, near misses and airspace violations pose a much bigger safety threat than commercial operations. He adds: “The restoration of universal drone registration is a very positive change. A serious accident caused by an irresponsible or malicious ‘hobbyist’ could tar the entire drone industry with the same brush and result in restrictions that would negatively impact commercial operators and hobbyists alike.”
