Overview
(October 30, 2017, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner Lucinda Low has received the Global Investigations Review (GIR) 2017 Outstanding Career Award. Ms. Low was honored at GIR’s 3rd annual awards dinner held at the Four Seasons hotel in Washington on October 26.
Ms. Low, who heads Steptoe’s Compliance, Investigations, Trade and Enforcement Department and co-chairs the FCPA/anti-corruption practice, has been advising clients on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and anti-corruption for more than two decades, and is a recognized authority in the area. Her work is worldwide, but she has special experience in Latin America, having lived and worked in Brazil, and leads Steptoe’s Brazil-specific initiative, which includes a focus on FCPA/anti-corruption compliance and enforcement work.
In an October 17 article announcing her selection , GIR wrote that Ms. Low has been a pioneer for women in a male-dominated field.
Currently, Ms. Low serves on the board of directors of the Coalition for Integrity (formerly known as Transparency International-USA) and as president of the American Society of International Law. Her practice also includes investor-state arbitration, and in September 2017, she was appointed by the World Bank president to the panel of arbitrators of the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes. Ms. Low was one of ten lawyers named to the panel and the only one from the United States.
This year alone, Ms. Low has been successful in receiving five declinations from the Department of Justice and/or the Securities and Exchange Commission on behalf of clients. This includes a declination for Linde North America Inc., one of the first declinations under the DOJ’s FCPA Pilot Program, established in 2016.
In the past year, Ms. Low has worked on investigation/enforcement matters in Brazil, Chile, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Peru, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sierra Leona, Uganda, Liberia, Nigeria, and Kazakhstan, and has been involved in counseling matters in additional jurisdictions.
In 2015, Ms. Low was recognized by GIR’s Women in Investigations: One Hundred Investigation Specialists from Around the World. She is fluent in Portuguese, proficient in Spanish and French, and has some knowledge of Italian, Russian and Japanese.
