Overview
(May 1, 2019, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner Lucinda Low has received the 2019 Louis B. Sohn Award for Public International Law. The award is given each year to a recipient "who has made significant contributions to the field of international law." The American Bar Association (ABA) Section of International Law presented Low with the award during an April 11 ceremony held at the Capital Hilton. Low shares this year’s award with Ambassador Hans Corell.
Low, who heads Steptoe's Compliance, Investigations, Trade and Enforcement Department and co-chairs the FCPA/anti-corruption practice, has been advising clients on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and anti-corruption for more than two decades, and is a recognized authority in the area. Her work is worldwide, but she has special experience in Latin America, having lived and worked in Brazil, and leads Steptoe's Brazil-specific initiative, which includes a focus on FCPA/anti-corruption compliance and enforcement work. Her FCPA/anti-corruption experience includes extensive work in Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, as well as several Caribbean countries.
Low is a member of the board of directors of the Coalition for Integrity (formerly known as Transparency International – USA), and also a member of the Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on International Law. She is a former president of the American Society of International Law and a former chair of the ABA Section of International Law. Low was the recipient of the William Ray Vallance Award presented by the Inter-American Bar Foundation, for making a significant contribution toward improving the law and jurisprudence of the Western Hemisphere. In addition, Low was the first recipient of the Mayre Rasmussen Award for the Advancement of Women in International Law.
