(February 26, 2018, Washington, DC) — Steptoe & Johnson LLP is pleased to announce that Markham Erickson has joined the Ron Brown Leaders Network Council – a team of business, organization, and association leaders who donate their time and business acumen to inspire and advise Ron Brown Leaders.
Steptoe is a proud sponsor of the Ron Brown Scholar Program (RBSP). The program is dedicated to improving the lives of intellectually gifted young African-American men and women who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential. In 1996, RBSP began awarding college scholarships to outstanding African-American students to honor the legacy of service of the late Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown. Each year, college students go through a rigorous application and interview process to be a scholar. Since 2016, Steptoe has partnered with RBSP to host a Ron Brown legal intern in its Washington office.
Mr. Erickson is chair of Steptoe’s Telecom, Internet & Media Group, where he counsels clients in some of the most highly visible, complex legal matters in these sectors. He successfully applies novel and creative theories, earning precedent-setting outcomes on cases of first impression. Mr. Erickson has represented Internet companies since the beginning of the commercial Internet, and he has been the lead counsel for Internet firms in the so-called network neutrality debate since its inception. He regularly engages the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice on investigations, complaints, rulemakings, and proposed mergers in the communications sector, and represents technology companies on questions relating to copyright and technology.
Mr. Erickson is widely recognized as one of the nation’s top Internet and media lawyers. He serves as co-chair to the annual Broadband and Policy Law Seminar at the Practicing Law Institute in New York City. He is ranked in The Legal 500, Super Lawyers, and Chambers USA, where Mr. Erickson is described as being “as knowledgeable on internet matters as anyone I have ever met” and as a “first-rate lawyer.” In recognition of his authority in the field, Mr. Erickson was appointed by the White House to represent the United States before the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development on Internet speech and regulatory matters.
In addition, Mr. Erickson is co-chair of Steptoe’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee. He also is a member of the firm’s Professional Advancement Committee and its Hiring Committee.
